Interface

Une personne du public, d'abord accueillie par une médiatrice, était invitée à s'asseoir face à l'interprète, de part et d'autre d'une table, et à parler dans un micro. Les paroles de la participante étaient transmises du micro à un ordinateur, transcrites par un logiciel de reconnaissance vocale, puis envoyées sous forme de requête à ChatGPT, l'IA conversationnelle de OpenAI. (Plus précisément, le projet utilisait le modèle GPT-4, personnalisé pour avoir une connaissance contextuelle et des attributs spécifiques, que j'expliquerai plus tard.) Ensuite, ChatGPT générait une réponse, qui était immédiatement envoyée à l'interprète dans une paire de lunettes de réalité augmentée (AR) permettant l'affichage de texte.

Son propre micro à la main, l'interprète répondait à la participante en temps réel, en lisant à haute voix le texte qui apparaissait dans ses lunettes. Les interprètes avaient pour consigne de lire de manière naturelle et spontanée; iels avaient la liberté d'improviser à leur guise, par exemple pour reformuler ou personnaliser leur réponse, ajouter leurs propres réflexions à une conversation, ou contourner les bogues, dysfonctionnements ou les occasionnelles réponses inappropriées. Mais les interprètes m'ont dit qu'en moyenne, environ 95 % de ce qu'iels disaient correspondaient exactement au texte reçu dans les lunettes. Les mots de la machine sortaient naturellement de la bouche des interprètes; le résultat était généralement si fluide qu'il était difficile, sinon impossible, de déceler qu'une IA générative était impliquée dans le processus.

Interface

A member of the public, first greeted by a mediator, was invited to sit facing the interpreter across a table and speak into a microphone. The participant's words went via the microphone to a computer, were transcribed by speech-to-text software and sent as a text request to OpenAI's ChatGPT. (Specifically, the project used the GPT-4 model, customized to have contextual knowledge and specific attributes, which I will explain later.) Then ChatGPT generated a response, which was immediately sent to the interpreter via a pair of augmented reality (AR) glasses that allowed for the display of text.

Their own microphone in hand, the interpreter would respond to the visitor in real time by reading aloud the text in their glasses, as it appeared. The interpreters were instructed to read in a natural and spontaneous manner. They had the liberty to improvise as they pleased, for example if they wanted to rephrase or personalize their response, or add their own thoughts to a conversation, or to smooth over bugs, glitches, or occasional insensitive responses. But they told me that, on average, about 95% of what they said was exactly the text as given. The words of the machine came naturally from the lips of the interpreters; the result was generally so fluid that it was difficult, if not impossible, to tell that a generative AI was involved in the process.

Les voix est une œuvre d'art public temporaire conçue par Nicolas Grenier, qui fut développée en collaboration avec MASSIVart et Sid Lee Architecture. Il s’agissait de la deuxième partie de Prémonitions, un projet invitant le public à explorer diverses façons d’interpréter notre époque, d’examiner l’influence de la technologie, et d’imaginer l’avenir qui se dessine. La première partie, Immersions & récits, présentait le travail de vingt artistes et collectifs locaux et internationaux dans un programme vidéo commissarié par Roxanne Arsenault et Caroline Douville.

Le projet s'inscrivait dans le cadre de l'initiative « J'aime travailler au centre-ville » de la Chambre de commerce du Montréal métropolitain, soutenue par le ministère de l'Économie, de l'Innovation et de l'Énergie et accueillie au Nouveau Centre par Ivanhoé Cambridge.

Les voix is a temporary public artwork conceived by Nicolas Grenier, developed in collaboration with MASSIVart and Sid Lee Architecture. This was the second part of Premonitions, a project inviting the public to explore different ways of interpreting our times, examining the influence of technology, and imagining the future that lies ahead. The first part, Immersions & récits, presented the work of twenty local and international artists and collectives in a video program curated by Roxanne Arsenault and Caroline Douville.

The project was part of the initiative “I love working downtown” powered by the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal, supported by the Ministère de l’Économie, de l'Innovation et de l'Énergie and hosted at Nouveau Centre par Ivanhoé Cambridge.

Nicolas Grenier, artiste
Nicolas Grenier est un artiste transdisciplinaire basé à Tiohtiá:ke / Montréal. Son travail explore les thèmes de la transformation de l'ordre social, du changement de paradigme et des structures de pouvoir. Nicolas est diplômé de l’Université Concordia et du California Institute of the Arts. Il a exposé au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Europe et en Asie, et il est représenté par les galeries Bradley Ertaskiran et Luis De Jesus Los Angeles. Son travail est soutenu par le Conseil des arts du Canada et le Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Avery Suzuki,  assistant
Avery Suzuki est un artiste basé à Tiohtiá:ke / Montréal. Son travail est inspiré par le folklore, la spiritualité, les artefacts culturels et la vie quotidienne. En 2023, il a complété un baccalauréat en studio arts à l'Université Concordia. Son travail a été présenté à la galerie FOFA de l’Université Concordia et il est soutenu par le Conseil des Arts de la Colombie-Britannique. 

Hannah Andrews, consultante
Hannah est consultante et spécialiste en art, IA et technologies émergentes. Elle est actuellement directrice du département Digital & Innovation in the Arts du British Council, où elle dirige l'innovation numérique à travers les Global Arts Programmes de l’organisation. Elle a passé cinq ans en tant que productrice créative au sein du Arts & Culture Lab de Google, et avait auparavant travaillé en tant que productrice indépendante spécialisée dans l'art et la technologie.

Martial Geoffre-Rouland, directeur technique
Diplômé de l'école supérieure de design et d'ingénierie Elisava de Barcelone, ses travaux sont axés sur l'art numérique et les installations interactives. Il a participé à de nombreuses collaborations avec un large éventail d'artistes, de studios indépendants et d'entreprises internationales, travaillant dans des domaines tels que le développement web, l'art numérique et la scénographie. Martial dirige Screen Club, un studio spécialisé dans la conception et l'élaboration de projets impliquant l'apprentissage automatique, l'interaction humain-machine, et plus encore.

Xavier Goulet, interprète
Xavier Goulet est un artiste interdisciplinaire basé à Tiohtiá:ke / Montréal. Il termine sa formation en interprétation à l’École de théâtre professionnel du Collège Lionel-Groulx en 2021. Il est codirecteur artistique et cofondateur de la compagnie de création moins trente huit. Il s’intéresse particulièrement à la perte de sens dans nos vies. Il travaille en art visuel, en mise en scène ainsi qu’en interprétation.

Léa-Kenza Laurent, interprète
Léa-Kenza Laurent est une artiste multidisciplinaire basée à Montréal. Née à Paris, elle commence la danse dans une école de quartier avant de continuer au conservatoire de Nantes. Elle étudie ensuite à l'UQAM où elle poursuit actuellement une maîtrise en danse. Elle y entame une recherche sur le dépassement de soi chez l’interprète en danse dans le processus de création chorégraphique. Enseignante en danse et chant, elle est également impliquée dans la performance et la création multidisciplinaire, et organise des évènements en art vivant avec Commun Collectif.

Julie Le Tallec, interprète
Installée à nouveau à Tiohtiá:ke/Montréal, l'artiste multidisciplinaire Julie Le Tallec puise son inspiration du voyage et des diverses cultures. Après une pause de deux ans passés à explorer l'Amérique latine, l'Europe et l'Afrique, elle reprend ses études en interprétation à l'École supérieure de Théâtre. Elle joue, écrit, fait de la mise en scène et enseigne, cherchant par son expérience de voyage à définir les similitudes et les différences dans l’unicité de l’être humain. Elle est co-directrice des Ateliers pour Acteurs de Montréal, une école de jeu caméra.

Melania Maria Balmaceda Venegas, interprète
Diplômée de l’École de théâtre professionnel du Collège Lionel-Groulx et bachelière en Études théâtrales, Melania Maria Balmaceda Venegas est une actrice polyvalente qui ne craint pas le ridicule. Son identité culturelle est une source d’inspiration importante dans son processus créatif. Étant latino-américaine et née au Québec, elle a baigné dans deux langues et deux cultures totalement différentes. Ce mélange teinte ses références et son caractère: elle est une force tranquille qui brûle de passion pour tout ce qu’elle entreprend.

Mikaël Morin, interprète
Mikaël Morin vient tout juste de terminer son parcours à l’École supérieure de théâtre de l’UQAM et fonce dans le milieu des arts vivants avec l’envie de créer des œuvres interdisciplinaires mêlant l’art de la drag, la performance et le pole-dance avec le théâtre. Mikaël est artiste genderqueer à Tiohtiá:ke / Montréal et co-dirige le collectif Les Talons Fous avec Luca Max, qui se spécialise dans le pole-théâtre.

Luca Max, interprète
Luca Max est une artiste interdisciplinaire germano-canadienne basée à Tiohtiá:ke / Montréal. Après un parcours dans le monde du journalisme, elle se tourne vers le théâtre et termine sa formation en interprétation à l'École supérieure de théâtre de l'UQAM en 2023. Actuellement, son travail est centré autour du pole-théâtre, une discipline toute nouvelle alliant pole dance et théâtre. Ses principales réflexions tournent autour de l'utilisation scénographique et dramaturgique que peut avoir la pole en elle-même.

Fa Pedneault, interprète
Fa est artiste de performance située à Tiohtiá:ke / Montréal. Son travail multidisciplinaire cherche les sens et ouvre l’espace à la poésie de ce qui est entre nous, jusque dans les tripes. //DÉSIR DE VIVRE// Avec un diplôme collégial d’art visuel achevé au CVM en 2020, ielle poursuit ses études en Performance Création à l’Université Concordia. Pour l’instant, son corps et sa tête émergent aléatoirement où l’espace et les autres la reçoivent.

Justine Prévost, interprète
Justine Prévost, diplômée de l’École supérieure de théâtre de l’UQAM, est une créatrice polyvalente et cofondatrice de la troupe théâtrale Les Impairs. Passionnée de théâtre et de danse depuis son enfance, elle s'y consacre à temps plein, avec une passion pour revisiter les mythes théâtraux, avec une vision critique et une volonté d'actualiser la place des femmes dans ses créations. Elle adore explorer de nouveaux médiums et n’hésite pas à se lancer tête première dans de nouveaux projets.

Alexis Tiseur, interprète
Artiste de Tiohtiá:ke/ Mooniyang/ Montreal dans l'âme, il a étudié le théâtre à l'UQAM après un long parcours dans le domaine de l'ingénierie et de la technologie. Passionné par l'improvisation, il essaie de brouiller les frontières entre le théâtre d'improvisation, la comédie et le drame autant par l’écriture que la création. Son besoin insatiable d'attention s’accompagne d’un profond désir de connecter avec les gens et de leur procurer un sentiment de béatitude cathartique — autant comme interprète qu'à travers l'écriture, la narration visuelle et la performance.

Claire Pearl, consultante
Claire Pearl est créatrice et interprète en danse contemporaine originaire de Tiohtiá:ke/ Mooniyang/ Montréal. Elle est fascinée par les effets transformateurs de l'imagination et du langage dans la performance; les états de présence, les textures physiques et les différentes réalités vécues. Elle a récemment présenté son travail au Québec, en France et en Autriche. Claire est diplômée en chorégraphie du Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, et détient un baccalauréat en danse et en chorégraphie de l'Université du Québec à Montréal.

Nicolas Grenier, Artist
Nicolas Grenier is a transdisciplinary artist based in Tiohtiá:ke / Montreal. His work explores themes of social order transformation, paradigm shift and structures of power. Grenier is a graduate of Concordia University and the California Institute of the Arts. He has exhibited in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia and is represented by the Bradley Ertaskiran and Luis De Jesus Los Angeles galleries. His work is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Avery Suzuki,  Assistant
Avery Suzuki is an artist based in Tiohtiá:ke / Montreal. His work is inspired by folklore, spirituality, cultural artifacts, and everyday life. He obtained his BFA from Concordia University in 2023. Avery has shown his work at Concordia’s FOFA Gallery and is supported by the BC Arts Council.

Hannah Andrews, Consultant
Hannah is a consultant and specialist in art, AI, and emerging technologies. Currently she is the British Council's Director of Digital & Innovation in the Arts, where she leads digital innovation across the organization’s Global Arts Programmes. Prior to this she spent five years as Creative Producer with Google’s Arts & Culture Lab, and worked as independent producer specializing in art and technology.

Martial Geoffre-Rouland, Technical Director
A graduate of Elisava Barcelona, Superior School of Design & Engineering, his works are focused on digital art and interactive installations. He has been involved in numerous collaborations with a diverse range of artists, independent studios, and global corporations, working in areas such as web development, digital art, and scenography. Martial leads Screen Club, a studio that specializes in designing and crafting projects that involve Machine Learning, human-computer interaction and more.

Xavier Goulet, Interpreter
Xavier Goulet is an interdisciplinary artist based in Tiohtiá:ke / Montréal. He completed his training in acting at the École de théâtre professionnel du Collège Lionel-Groulx in 2021. He is co-artistic director and co-founder of the creative company moins trente huit. He is particularly interested in the loss of meaning in our lives. He works in visual art, directing and acting.

Léa-Kenza Laurent, Interpreter
Léa-Kenza Laurent is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montreal. Born in Paris, she began dance at a local school before continuing at the continued at the Conservatoire de Nantes. She then studied at UQAM, where she is currently pursuing a Master's degree in dance. Her research focuses on how dance performers surpass themselves in the choreographic creation process. A dance and singing teacher, she is also involved in performance and multidisciplinary creation, and organizes live art events with Commun Collectif.

Julie Le Tallec, Interpreter
Newly returned to Tiohtiá:ke/Montréal, multidisciplinary artist Julie Le Tallec draws her inspiration from travel and diverse cultures. After a two-year break spent exploring Latin America, Europe and Africa, she resumed her acting studies at the École supérieure de Théâtre. She acts, writes, directs and teaches, using her travel experience to define the similarities and differences in the uniqueness of the human being. She is co-director of Ateliers pour Acteurs de Montréal, a school for camera work.

Melania Maria Balmaceda Venegas, Interpreter
Graduate of the Professional Theater School of Lionel-Groulx College and Bachelor of Theater Studies, Melania Maria Balmaceda Venegas is a versatile actress who does not fear ridicule. Her cultural identity is an important source of inspiration in her creative process. Being Latin American and born in Quebec, she was immersed in two languages and two totally different cultures. This mixture tints her references and her character: she is a quiet force who burns with passion for everything she undertakes.

Luca Max, Interpreter
Luca Max is a German-Canadian interdisciplinary artist based in Tiohtiá:ke / Montreal. After a short career in journalism, she turned to theater, completing her acting training at UQAM's École supérieure de théâtre in 2023. Currently, her work focuses on pole-théâtre, a brand-new discipline combining pole dance and theater. Her main reflections revolve around the scenographic and dramaturgical use of the pole itself.

Mikaël Morin, Interpreter
Mikaël Morin recently finished his studies at École supérieure de théâtre de l'UQAM and is now diving into the field of living arts with the desire to create interdisciplinary works mixing drag, performance art and pole dancing with theater. Mikaël is a genderqueer artist based at Tiohtiá:ke / Montréal and co-directs Les Talons Fous with Luca Max, and they focus their work on pole-theater.

Fa Pedneault, Interpreter
Fa is a performance artist based in Tiohtiá:ke / Montréal. Their multidisciplinary approach is seeking for meaning and opening spaces to the poetry in between us, from the guts.//DESIRE TO LIVE// Graduate in visual art from CVM in 2020, they now pursue a BFA in Performance Creation at Concordia University. For now, their head and body sometimes emerge where space and others welcome it.

Justine Prévost, Interpreter
Justine Prévost, a graduate of UQAM's École supérieure de théâtre, is a versatile creator and co-founder of the theatre company Les Impairs. Passionate about theater and dance since childhood, she devotes herself to it full-time, with a passion for revisiting theatrical myths, a critical vision and a desire to update the place of women in her creations. She loves exploring new mediums, and doesn't hesitate to throw herself headfirst into new projects.

Alexis Tiseur, Interpreter
A Tiohtiá:ke/ Mooniyang/ Montreal artist at heart, he studied theater at UQAM after a long career in engineering and technology. Passionate about improvisation, he tries to blur the boundaries between improvisational theater, comedy and drama through both writing and creation. His insatiable need for attention is matched by a deep desire to connect with people and bring them a sense of cathartic bliss - both as a performer and through writing, visual storytelling and performance.

Claire Pearl, Consultant
Claire Pearl is a contemporary dance maker and performer based in Tiohtiá:ke/ Mooniyang/ Montreal. She is fascinated by the transformative effects of imagination and language in live performance; states of presence, detailed physical textures and perceived realities. She recently presented her work in Quebec, France and Austria. Claire is a graduate in choreography from the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, and holds a BFA in dance and choreogaphy from the Université du Québec à Montréal.
